Bodily Integrity And The Politics Of Circumcision, Culture, Controversy, and Change

Bodily Integrity And The Politics Of Circumcision, Culture, Controversy, and Change

user posted image

Book Description
How is it that, at the beginning of the twenty-first century, it is still possible for males and females to be denied their inherent right to keep all the body parts with which they were born?

Circumcision is a cultural phenomenon that affects 15.3 million children and young adults annually. In terms of gender, 13.3 millions boys and 2 million girls are subjected to the involuntary removal of part or all of their external sex organs every year. Few people, however, ask why such practices persist or how modern societies can tolerate this inherent violation of human rights. The problem of female circumcision is being addressed on an international level, while male circumcision remains a subject many academics are reluctant to fully or impartially examine. This book explores the problem of male and female circumcision in modern society from religious, anthropological, psychological, medical, legal, and ethical perspectives.

Bodily Integrity and the Politics of Circumcision: Culture, Controversy, and Change illuminates the vulnerability of human society to medical, economic, and historical pressures. It provides a much-needed, thoughtful, and detailed analysis of the devastating impact of circumcision on bodily integrity and human rights, and it provides hope for change.

Chronic Pain And Family: A Clinical Perspective

Chronic Pain And Family: A Clinical Perspective
user posted image

Book Description
Over the past two decades attention to family issues in relation to chronic pain has been on the rise. There has been a proliferation of research and clinical literature in the field since the first major review on this topic was conducted in 1982. However, no comprehensive review book has been published. Generally speaking, the role of the family in chronic pain literature has been reported from four perspectives: (1) family factors in the etiology of chronic pain; (2) role of spouse in the perpetuation of pain behaviors; (3) impact of chronic pain on family functioning and on the health of spouse and children; and (4) family therapy for these families. The main thrust of this book will be the issues of impact on the family and therapy. The broader literature of family issues in medical disorders will be incorporated into the body of the book to allow the reader to become familiar with some of the common problems shared by medically ill and chronic pain families and many problems that appear to be specifically associated with chronic pain. The book will offer clinical guidelines in conducting family assessment and couple and family therapy for these patients. This book will not be simply an update, but will adopt a fresh approach to this complex clinical area. The book will have 10 chapters. Each chapter will report the current state of knowledge through a comprehensive review of the most recent literature, and discuss relevant clinical issues through extensive use of case illustrations. The chapters will be designed to bring the reader up to date on the literature as well as provide clinical guidelines for practice.

The Ecg Made Easy, 6th Edition

The Ecg Made Easy, 6th Edition
user posted image

This highly respected book is a simple, readable guide to the accurate identification and interpretation of normal and abnormal electrocardiogram (ECG) patterns for medical students, nurses and junior doctors. The emphasis throughout is on the straightforward practical application of the ECG. It will prove useful to all medical and health care staff who require clear, basic knowledge about the ECG.
The ECG Made Easy has for some time been the pocket reference for junior doctors... good starter, but you may need some help. One of the most popular introductory texts on this subject. All the basic concepts for understanding this topic are included, though there could be more emphasis on possible areas of confusion; such as the different between leads and wires . This book also suffers from only being pocket sized and having pocket sized tracings, and on pages that depict limb and chest leads the layout could be improved to show that they are separate groups. For a newcomer to this subject you may not find it all that easy, as the explanations may need some practical demonstrations from an accomplished teacher with topics such as the cardiac axis. However this book does avoid the jargon and physiology that can be off putting in most other introductory texts. If this book leaves you with further questions, you would probably also need and indeed benefit from the author s two other titles The ECG in Practice and 100 ECG Problems . This would enable you to improve your skills of interpretation, and the three titles bought over time would provide an adequate inexpensive reference shelf for most health care workers.

Book Description
This timely collection explores ethical and legal dilemmas in healthcare arising from globalization. Conflicts between public interests and individual rights, the challenge of regulating professionals and access to health services, and the effects of a global market all feature prominently in contemporary debates in this area. As a result of globalization, issues in health law and bioethics can no longer be understood solely within political boundaries that define traditional notions of individuals and communities. Rather, solutions for emerging problems require a global conception of rights and obligations, including the re-evaluation of ethical frameworks and legal regimes that currently govern exchanges in healthcare. Leading scholars in bioethics, law, medicine and philosophy from various jurisdictions engage these themes in this volume, and demonstrate the need for transnational solutions in a global age of healthcare.

Book Description:

Modelling the genesis and propagation of electrical activity in the heart in quantitative terms is one of the most important recent applications of mathematical modelling in biology. The main research direction, and the most important for biological and medical applications, is the development of realistic models of electrical activity in cardiac tissue and the whole mammalian heart. Recent progress in nonlinear dynamics, advances in computer technology and experiments on cardiac tissue have made feasible the construction of such models. Computational Biology of the Heart is the first book to provide a comprehensive survey of recent research together with a systematic overview of the subject. The contributions, all written by experts in the different areas of the subject, cover all main aspects of whole heart modelling: from excitation in single cells, to two and three dimensional models of cardiac tissue and the whole heart. Various computational models and techniques are described and then applied to reconstruct and visualise modelled activity in both normal and pathological heart tissues. The models are nonlinear and use techniques of ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations and eikonal equations. The book also provides a review of modelling cardiac contraction, mapping electrical activity from electrocardiograms, and recent experimental observations of wave propagation in the whole heart. Graduate students and researchers in such areas as applied mathematical biology, clinical physiology and cardiology will find this book to be an invaluable resource for their work.

DNA Conformation and Transcription

DNA Conformation and Transcription
(Molecular Biology Intelligence Unit)
Takashi Ohyama (Editor)

user posted image

Book Description
Despite remarkable progress in genome science, we are still far from a clear
understanding of how genomic DNA is packaged without entanglement into a nucleus, how genes are wrapped up in chromatin, how chromatin structure is faithfully inherited from mother to daughter cells, and how the differential expression of genes is enabled in a given cell type. Exploring and answering these questions constitutes one of the next frontiers in the 21st century.
We are just beginning to appreciate how Multifarious DNA structures provide additional structural and functional dimensions to chromatin organization and gene expression. DNA Conformation and Transcription is the first book that compiles the fruits of the studies that have been performed to date to solve the riddle 'written' in DNA conformation ("conformation code"). This book provides a comprehensive overview of the field by covering history of the field, up-to-date topics, clarifications of present day research, and future perspective of what is still to be discovered. Thus, it serves as an invaluable source of information on the "conformation code".

Book Description
Branching morphogenesis, the creation of branched structures in the body, is a key feature of animal and plant development. This book brings together, for the first time, expert researchers working on a variety of branching systems to present a state-of-the-art view of the mechanisms that control branching morphogenesis. Systems considered range from single cells, to blood vessel and drainage duct systems to entire body plans, and approaches range from observation through experiment to detailed biophysical modelling. The result is an integrated overview of branching.

Handbook Of Complex Occupational Disability Claims

Handbook Of Complex Occupational Disability Claims
user posted image

Book Description
Chronic back and neck pain. Whiplash. Fibromyalgia. Carpal tunnel syndrome. Intractable headaches. Depression. Anxiety and posttraumatic stress. Concussion. More than ever, the term workplace disabilities is synonymous with greater clinical and case management complexity and escalating personal, social, occupational and economic cost. Complex illnesses and injuries that defy a traditional medical management model continue to baffle medical, mental health, rehabilitation, compensation, corporate, and legal professionals despite new advances in diagnosis, prevention, and rehabilitation. The Handbook of Complex Occupational Disability Claims: Early Risk Identification, Intervention and Prevention cuts through the confusion by integrating current theories and findings into a state-of-the-art tool for critical thinking, decision making, and effective practice.

This clear-sighted, interdisciplinary and integrative volume goes beyond cataloguing symptoms or sorting legitimate from fraudulent cases—its emphasis is on early detection of risk and management to prevent injury from developing into long-term disability. Editors Schultz and Gatchel and their 49 expert contributors offer lucid evaluations of the scientific and clinical literature to repair the mind/body split that has traditionally defined this field:

- Conceptual and methodological issues in the prediction of disability

- Biopsychosocial perspectives on the most prevalent disabling conditions, including chronic pain syndromes, repetitive strain injuries, depression, anxiety, traumatic brain injury, and posttraumatic stress disorder

- Application of clinical findings to the rehabilitation, disability management, occupational and compensation arenas, and return-to-work practices

- In-depth discussion of the relationship between impairment and work disability

- Specific evidence-based early intervention approaches for workers and patients at risk

A book that synthesizes so many diverse viewpoints has the potential to influence both policy and practice across disciplines and cut through politicization of these still poorly understood conditions with evidence. The Handbook is important reading for all clinicians, professionals, and members of rehabilitation and disability management teams, across healthcare, occupational and compensation settings.

Book Description
"This book takes a broad view of urban health, emphasizing urban social factors important to population health. The editors successfully bridge urban health inquiry and public health practice by combining descriptions of issues in urban health, methods used in urban health studies, and examples from practitioners.... Promoting health in cities requires an appreciation of the multiple levels of determinants that shape population health, and this handbook is a good starting point for such appreciation." Tord Kjellstrom, Visiting Professor of Swedish National Institute of Public Health and Visiting Fellow at the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health, Australian National University (Environmental Health Perspectives, January 2006).

As more people worldwide live in cities, increasingly we need to understand how cities and city living affect population health. Does city living negatively affect health? Conversely, can city living enhance population health and well-being?

Over forty experts from around the world bring a depth of ideas to the Handbook of Urban Health, making the Handbook a focused resource for a range of health disciplines. The Handbook presents:

--A discussion of the health of specific urban populations, among them immigrants, children, the elderly, racial and sexual minorities, the homeless, and the poor.

--Methods relevant to the study of urban health including epidemiology, research methods, funding and policy issues, urban planning

--Practical issues for developing healthy cities including interventions, preventive strategies, providing health services, and teaching urban health

--International perspectives from developing countries and the World Health Organization

--Integrative chapters that conclude each of the book's sections, bringing together theoretical models with the big picture.

A unique professional idea book, research resource, and teaching text, the Handbook of Urban Health challenges readers to consider the role that cities plays in shaping population health and to generate solutions that can make cities healthier places for all those who live there.

General Ultrasound in the Critically Ill

General Ultrasound in the Critically Ill

By Daniel A. Lichtenstein
Publisher: Springer
Number Of Pages: 220
Publication Date: 2004-12-03
Sales Rank: 166728
ISBN / ASIN: 3540208224
Book Description:

General ultrasound in the critically ill describes a new clinical tool: ultrasound for the intensive care and emergency physician. Written by an intensivist familiar with ultrasound, it specifically details findings of immediate clinical relevance throughout its approx. 220 pages. Through a whole-body approach, this book considers new emergency applications regarding the abdomen, venous system, head, heart, and the most original topic, the lung.
Flow charts are proposed to resolve daily intensive care and emergency occurrences: acute dyspnea, shock, unexplained fever, etc. The strong points and pitfalls of ultrasound are reviewed in detail.
This book shows just how critical ultrasound has proven to be in satisfying a major concern in the intensive care and emergency medicine fields: speed and accuracy. With this ever-present requirement for rapid diagnosis in mind, General ultrasound in the critically ill provides a key to practicing a visual medicine, a great benefit to the critically ill patient, especially since ultrasound is noninvasive and can be done at the bedside. This volume is not only an exhaustive atlas dealing with the most variable aspects of the critically ill patient, but it is above all a guide, a permanent aid in the therapeutic decision.

An Atlas of Parkinson’s Disease and Related Disorders

An Atlas of Parkinson's Disease and Related Disorders

Product Details
Book Publisher: Taylor & Francis (15 April, 1998)
ISBN: 1850709432
Book author: G. David Perkin

Book Description:
Any discussion of the clinical characteristics of Parkinson's disease must take into account the inaccuracies of clinical diagnosis. In a successive series of 100 patients with a clinical diagnosis of Parkinson's disease, only 76 fulfilled the criteria for diagnosis at post-mortem examination. Attempts to tighten the diagnostic criteria lead to increased specificity but with reduced sensitivity. In An Atlas of Parkinson's Disease and Related Disorders Dr. David Perkin has compiled a series of photographs highlighting various aspects of Parkinson's disease and related motor disorders. The book provides a useful sample of clinical, investigative (CT, MRI, and PET) and pathological images with succinct descriptive text of the disorders featured. Approximately one-third of the material in this book is pathological, incorporating both macroscopic and microscopic sections. A further quarter of the material is represented by imaging, principally magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) scanning. The area of movement disorders has been particularly fruitful for PET scanning, which promises, with the development of specific ligands for the various receptor sites, to further expand understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms of the movement disorders. Reflecting the highest standards clinical photography and imaging along with the distinguished author's expert knowledge of the subject, Dr. Perkin's An Atlas of Parkinson's Disease and Related Disorders is the definitive and essential clinical reference in its field.

Book author: Riccardo Lencioni, Clotilde Della Pina, Laura Crocetti, Dania Cioni, Hans Peter Weskott, Jean-Michel Correas, Ahmed Khairoune, Anais Vallet-Picard, Stanislas Pol, Oliver Hélénon

Book Description:
In recent years, the imaging-based diagnosis of mass liver lesions has become increasingly complex due to the number and morphological variability of lesions that modern imaging techniques are currently able to display. If the sensitivity in detection has greatly increased, characterisation has remained difficult and represents a critical challenge for the clinician. The availability of blood-pool contrast agents for ultrasound (US), in particular second-generation US contrast agents based on perfluorocarbon- or sulfur-hexafluoride-filled microbubbles, and the development of contrast-specific software and technologies have opened up new perspectives both for the immediate characterisation of any mass lesion detected in the liver and for increasing the sensitivity of US in the detection of liver metastases.Taking into account the great impact of this new technology on clinical practice, the European Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (EFSUMB) organised, in January 2004, in Rotterdam, a consensus meeting of experts in order to develop guidelines for the use of US contrast agents in the diagnosis of liver diseases . These guidelines, as well as discussions of further advances in the clinical application of contrast-enhanced harmonic US are presented in this book by an internationally renowned group of experts. The book represents provides an important starting point for clinical implementation of this new diagnostic procedure.

From Computer to Brain

Product Details
Book Publisher: Springer (01 October, 2002)
ISBN: 0387955267
Book author: William W. Lytton
Amazon Rating: 5.0

Book Description:
Biology undergraduates, medical students and life-science graduate students often have limited mathematical skills. Similarly, physics, math and engineering students have little patience for the detailed facts that make up much of biological knowledge. Teaching computational neuroscience as an integrated discipline requires that both groups be brought forward onto common ground. This book does this by making ancillary material available in an appendix and providing basic explanations without becoming bogged down in unnecessary details. The book will be suitable for undergraduates and beginning graduate students taking a computational neuroscience course and also to anyone with an interest in the uses of the computer in modeling the nervous system.

Book Description
2004 BMA Medical Book Competition Winner

"This is an exciting book, with a new approach to use of the MRI scanner. It bridges the gap between clinical research and general neuro-radiological practice. It is accessible to the clinical radiologist, and yet thorough in its treatment of the underlying physics and of the science of measurement. It is likely to become a classic." British Medical Association

This indispensable 'how to' manual of quantitative MR is essential for anyone who wants to use the gamut of modern quantitative methods to measure the effects of neurological disease, its progression, and its response to treatment. It contains both the methodology and clinical applications, reflecting the increasing interest in quantitative MR in studying disease and its progression.

* The editor is an MR scientist with an international reputation for high quality research
* The contributions are written jointly by MR physicists and MR clinicians, producing a practical book for both the research and medical communities
* A practical book for both the research and medical communities

"Paul Tofts has succeeded brilliantly in capturing the essence of what needs to become the future of radiology in particular, and medicine in general – quantitative measurements of disease." Robert I. Grossman, M.D. New York, University School of Medicine (from the Foreword)
